Prepare Your Landscape for Winter

Updated: Nov 15

As the temperatures drop and winter approaches, your yard faces new challenges. Preparing your landscape in November ensures it remains healthy and beautiful through the colder months. From clearing leaves to protecting your hardscape, these steps will help winterize your outdoor space. Let’s dive in!

1. Clear Away Fallen Leaves

Fallen leaves might look picturesque, but they can suffocate your lawn, create slippery surfaces, and encourage mold growth. Removing them ensures your grass gets the air and sunlight it needs to stay healthy, even under snow.

How to Do It:

  • Rake leaves regularly and bag them for disposal or composting.

  • Use a mulching mower to shred leaves directly into your lawn, adding nutrients to the soil.

  • Clear leaves from flower beds and around trees to protect these areas from pests.

2. Protect Your Plants

Winter winds and frost can wreak havoc on sensitive plants. Wrapping evergreens, shrubs, and roses in burlap helps prevent desiccation and frost damage.

Before the ground freezes, give your plants a deep watering. This ensures the roots have enough moisture to survive when water becomes less accessible in the soil.

Remove dead or weak branches to prevent snow from breaking them, but avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress plants before winter.

3. Prep Your Hardscape

Cracks in walkways, patios, and driveways can worsen during winter as freezing water expands inside them. Inspect these areas and seal any gaps to prevent long-term damage.

Prepare for icy conditions by keeping salt or sand on hand. Use products that are safe for your hardscape to avoid damaging surfaces.

Add outdoor mats and non-slip runners to entryways and heavily trafficked paths to ensure safety during snowy weather.

4. Mulch and Fertilize

Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around flower beds, shrubs, and trees. This acts as an insulating blanket, keeping roots at a stable temperature during fluctuating winter weather.

Apply a winter fertilizer with a balanced mix of nutrients to help your grass recover faster in spring. Winterizing fertilizers are designed to promote root health and prevent nutrient loss.

Cut back perennials to about 2-3 inches above ground level and cover them with mulch to prevent frost heaving.
